Black Arts Movement
Black Arts poetry developed in Harlem, 1965, following the assassination of Malcolm X. LeRoi Jones (Amiri Baraka) made a symbolic move from Manhattan's Lower East Side to Harlem, where he founded the Black Arts Repertory Theatre/School, which is considered the formal beginning of the black arts movement. This movement was no doubt a contentious era. Time Magazine describes it as ,”The artistic sister of the Black Power Movement,' the Black Arts Movement stands as the single most controversial moment in the history of African-American literature--possibly in American literature as a whole”. Although the movement is credited for its vulgar language and inappropriate terms, it is also acknowledged for its inspiring a new generation of artists. The Black Arts Movement is known for poets such as Amiri Baraka, Gwendolyn Brooks, and Nikki Giovanni.
